South Cone Trading Company: Saving Earth
from:
People are aware that most furniture companies get wood from forests in order to manufacture their furniture products, where else. If this would continue for a few more years without regulation from any organization or institution, there will come a time when there would be no more trees in our forests. And naturally, the furniture companies would be greatly affected. But most importantly, we would be losing forests that could alter our nature.
South Cone Trading Company is well-aware of this problem that many furniture manufacturers face today. And so the company has made efforts to coordinate with non-profit organizations regarding issues on rainforest preservation. This company initiative is really a great decision, which even other furniture manufacturers find hard to believe.
With South Cone Trading Company’s initiative to reverse such trend in the manufacture of furniture, it is able to show other furniture companies that there is an alternative way to use wood resources coming from rainforests.
About 75% of Peruvian furniture is exported by South Cone Trading Company. Its main office is based in Gardena California, and its factories are located in Argentina and Peru. More than five hundred retail stores in the United States of America sells South Cone furniture products.
South Cone Trading Company is also examining the many aspects of its environmental operations. South Cone furniture has a durable finish. To achieve this, they use alcohol based stains and top the coats with petroleum based lacquer, which is known to be harmful to a person’s health. The health of the workers that apply such finish are compromised.
South Cone imports and manufactures goods from Peru. South Cone Trading Company is quite popular because of its dedication to the people who manufactures their products, as well as the environment. It is a certified corporation by the Forest Stewardship Council or the FSC. Retailers and end consumers of South Cone Trading Company are part in sustaining the harvested tropical-hardwoods. The FSC is the most reliable, most rigorous, and sustainable rainforest management program in the whole world.
Making and selling furniture is a tough business. That is why South Cone Trading Company is really striving for a positive impact on all its phases of operation. The company has been doing a lot of operation adjustments in order to adhere to the programs of the FSC.
The first operation phase generally starts in the rainforest where the primary raw material (tropical hardwood) is obtained. South Cone Company needed hardwoods to maintain its operation but they are faced with the problem that hardwoods are also needed to maintain the rainforest environment.
Having been issued with a certification from the FSC, the South Cone Trading Company abides with the guidelines set by the council for harvesting different trees.
They now cut trees on rainforest designated places only. The company is only allowed to cut about 10% of trees into the divided lots in the rainforest. Through FSC, South Cone Trading Company’s woods are 60% certified. The hardwoods used in manufacturing furniture are a mixture of certified and non-certified FSC woods. Because of this, only about forty percent of the total manufactured furniture of South Cone Company carries the approved tag of the FSC.
The FSC further states that the company’s profit is not affected and therefore, there is no need to raise the furniture’s price. With South Cone Trading Company’s movement, hopefully other furniture manufacturers will do the same in the near future.
